How to apply for Free School Meals

We have had a number of queries from parent/carers relating to the eligibility of your child/ren for free school meals. Children in EYFS and KS1 receive universal free school meals, this is a scheme set up by the government and is different to your child/ren being in receipt of free school meals.

Please see criteria for eligibility below:

  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guarantee element of Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earning of your most recent assessment periods)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Children who get paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or carer, can also be eligible for free school meals.

If your child is eligible for free school meals, they’ll remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary).
